The recently formed Merseyside Media Network has announced the categories for its first award scheme.

Sponsored by Littlewoods, the awards will be presented at a dinner and reception at Liverpool’s Holiday Inn City Centre in the spring.

Award categories include news journalist of the year, features journalist of the year, sports journalist of the year, photojournalist of the year, Littlewoods business journalist of the year, scoop of the year, designer of the year and newcomer of the year.

The Merseyside journalist of the year will be selected from the winners of the above categories.

In addition, there is a student journalist of the year award. All entries must have been published or broadcast between 1 January and 31 December, 2003. The closing date for entries is Saturday, 28 February, 2004.

Ken Bennett, former Mirror senior news executive and founder-secretary of the Network, said: “The awards will recognise and reward our own and celebrate the excellence of journalism on Merseyside.”
