The Sunday Mercury in Birmingham has launched a Forgotten Heroes campaign to honour those who took part in the D-Day invasion almost 60 years ago, writes Mary Stevens.
The paper is supporting the Normandy Veterans Association in its bid to persuade the Government to commemorate the anniversary in style. The Government plans to send a junior minister and a small army band to an international ceremony next year – the Mercury is campaigning for Tony Blair and members of the Royal Family to attend.
Deputy editor Paul Cole said: “The feeling we got from the Government is that they celebrated the 50th anniversary and they will celebrate the 75th anniversary but by then there won’t be many D-Day veterans left. These people survived the horrors of the landings and now they are being deprived of a voice.”
