Former
Mirror editor Piers Morgan is now the proud owner of Press Gazette.
Together with celebrity PR Matthew Freud, Morgan has formed a new
company called Press Gazette Ltd, which completed the deal with Quantum
Business Media on Thursday evening. Roger Eastoe, Mirror group managing director
when Morgan was its editor, has been brought in as a consultant to help
the transition of the business as it seeks new premises, possibly in
Fleet Street.
The existing editorial staff will remain in place,
but Morgan has big plans to invest in the title which could mean an
expansion of the team.
He is the third former Fleet Street editor
to be involved with Press Gazette in its 40 year history. Colin Valdar,
who had edited the Daily Sketch, launched the title in 1966 and in the
1980s Charles Wintour, who had previously edited the Evening Standard,
had a stint in the editor’s chair.
