Mark Oaten: Tabloids should 'stick to the facts'

The Liberal Democrat MP who resigned as home affairs spokesman after the News of the World exposed his affair with a male prostitute has urged the tabloids to “keep a level head” and avoid “knee-jerk reactions” when deciding whether to publish a salacious story.

Winchester MP Mark Oaten said he welcomed the FIA’s decision not to pass a vote of no confidence in Max Mosley, its president at the centre of a News of the World story.

Writing in the Guardian, Oaten said he was not in favour of a privacy law, but “all I would ask is that papers stick to the facts, ignoring gossip and intrigue”.
