The Daily Mail has been named newspaper of the year at the British Press Awards 2003. Its determined questioning of the government, not only on the subject of the war, but on many other issues, combined with its professional, polished presentation day in and day out won the day. One judge described it as “the only real Government Opposition party”. Another said: “It understands the fears and prejudices of its readers which is why it is loved and hated by journalists in equal measures, but never ignored.”
