Magazine ABCs: Leaders wilt as women’s sector grows

A sharp circulation decline for some of the biggest names in women's lifestyle magazines could not halt a continued improvement for the sector.

According to figures released today by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the sector showed a 4.7 per cent year-on-year improvement in circulations in the second half of 2009.

A total of 6.58m titles were distributed during the period, with overall circulation 9.5 per cent higher than in the first half of last year, as more than and 500,000 extra magazines were sold in this sector in the second half of the year as a result.

Conde Nast's Glamour retained its top spot with a per-issue average of 515,281in the last six months of 2009 – despite a 5.9 per cent drop year on year.

IPC Media's Essentials gained 13.9 per cent year-on-year to be the sector's biggest mover, giving it an average circulation of 112,135 each month.

 

Cosmopolitan was again in second place with an average sales figure of 430,353, despite its 4.5 per cent drop.

Also the negative growth column, Marie Claire dropped 9.9 per cent to 283,025 while Conde Nast's Easy Living dropped 8.1 per cent to 170,033.

Shortlist Media's free weekly magazine for women, Stylist, had an ABC debut of 410,674. A year-on-year comparision was not available as the title only launched in October.
