Magazine ABCs: How the big consumer publishers fared

None of the UK’s major consumer magazine publishers circulated more copies in the second half of last year than in the same period in 2007, ABC data has revealed.

According to the Periodical Publishers Association 1.103 billion magazines were circulated in the UK in 2008. This compares with 1.198 billion in 2007.

Here we look at 10 of the biggest publishing houses and the titles that fared the best (and worst) in the latest consumer magazine ABCs.

Bauer Consumer Media
Total circulation down 8.5%

Biggest rise: Golf World, up 19.2 per cent to 35,787
Other increases: Arena and Empire

Biggest fall: Kerrang, down 32.1 per cent to 52,272.
Other declines: FHM, Heat, Zoo

BBC Worldwide
Total circulation down 4.3%

Biggest riser: Easy Cook, up 20.4 per cent to 88,692
Other increases: BBC Top Gear Magazine, Top of the Pops

Biggest fall: Doctor Who Adventures Magazine, down 47 per cent at 82,205 (it went from fortnightly to weekly)
Other declines: Toybox, Balamory, Amy Magazine, Teletubbies

Conde Nast
Total circulation down 1.2%

Biggest rise: Vanity Fair, up 1.8 per cent to 101,169
Other increases: GQ, Conde Nast Brides

Biggest fall: Easy Living, down 5.6 per cent to 185,115

Dennis Publishing
Total circulation down 6.5%

Biggest rise: The Week – up 6.4 per cent to 154,512
Other increases: Custom PC, Men’s Fitness

Biggest fall: Maxim – down 41.4 per cent to 45,951
Other declines: Computer Shopper, Bizarre, Micro Mart

Future Publishing
Total circulation down 2.9%

Biggest rise: MAC Format – up 25 per cent to 29,447
Other increases: Linux Format, Playstation Official, Photo Plus

Biggest fall: Fast Car – down 30 per cent to 36,009
Other declines: PC Answers, PC Format, What Laptop

H Bauer
Total circulation down 4.9%

Biggest rise: Bella – up 1.1 per cent to 224,013
Other increases: Take A Crossword

Biggest fall: TV Quick – down 20.8 per cent to 167,507
Other declines: That’s Life, Take A Break

Hachette Filipacchi
Total circulation down 1.2%

Biggest rise: All About Soap – up 13.4 per cent to 113,436
Other increases: Red, Psychologies

Biggest fall: Inside Soap – down 5.9 per cent to 188,273

Haymarket Consumer Media
Total circulation down 9.5%

Biggest rise: There weren’t any

Biggest fall: What Car? Used Price Guide – down 30.1 per cent to 9,474

IPC Media
Total circulation down 6.3%

Biggest rise: Soaplife – up 9.6 per cent to 112,275
Other increases: Prediction, Anglers Mail, Woman and Home

Biggest fall: New Musical Express – down 24.3 per cent to 48,459
Other declines: Loaded, Superbike, TV Easy

National Magazine Company
Total circulation down 6.8%

Biggest rise: Cosmopolitan Bride, up 16.1 per cent to 37,148
Other increases: Zest, Coast

Biggest fall: Real People – down 19.4 per cent to 217,241
Other declines: Reveal, Best, Good Housekeeping
