Local radio battles national stations in Sonys

This year’s nominations for the Sony Radio Academy Awards highlight the success of local and commercial radio as they vie for awards alongside national and BBC stations.

Real Radio Yorkshire has been nominated for four awards, including the news and current affairs programme award for Real News at Five and the news feature award for The Bradford City Fire: 20 Years After.

The News Journalist of the Year award includes nominations for the Radio City news team in Liverpool alongside Angus Stickler, BBC Radio 4; Eddie Mair, BBC Radio 4; Christian Fraser, BBC Radio Five Live; and Peter Allen, BBC Radio Five Live.

Eddie Mair, who won News Journalist of the Year 2005, is this year nominated for the same award as well as Speech Broadcaster of the Year.

BBC Radio 4’s Today programme is the only BBC breakfast show to be nominated in the Breakfast Show Award, which includes a nomination for Nick Ferrari at Breakfast on LBC.

The Today programme has also been nominated for the News and Current Affairs Programme award.

The awards ceremony will take place on 8 May at the Grosvenor Hotel in London. For a full list of nominations visit www.pressgazette.co.uk
