Liverpool Post and Echo triumph at O2 regional awards

Trinity Mirror‘s Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Daily Post were the big winners at last night’s Cheshire and Merseyside O2 Media Awards, scooping eight of the 16 prizes.

Daily Post journalist Laura Davis was crowned digital journalist of the year as well as winning a joint award with her Echo colleague Jade Wright for entertainment writer of the year.

There were also awards for Post journalists Ben Schofield (young journalist of the year) and David Bartlett (business reporter of the year).

Sister title the Echo took the awards for best feature writer (Paddy Shennan) and best reporter (Luke Traynor). The two papers shared the photography prize for the work of Gareth Jones.

ITV Granada Reports beat the BBC’s North-West Tonight and BBC Radio Merseyside for the team of the year award.

Granada Reports also picked up the award for sports journalism and reporter Caroline Hacking was presented with a special achievement award.

Judge Paul Newman, director of communications at the Media City complex in Salford, described her as “one of the brightest sparks in the region and a star in the making”.

The Warrington Guardian was named newspaper of the year and the Southport Visiter won scoop of the year for an unusual story about a teenager, arrested on the charge of “stealing by finding”, after handing in a mobile phone he had found in the street to his local police station.

O2 communications director Glenn Manoff, who hosted the ceremony, said: “The quality of entries from the region’s press was outstanding.”
