Letter leader sees Wareing departure

The English journalist brought in to edit the Belfast News Letter has left the paper amid controversy surrounding a strident pro-Unionist leader column.

Nigel Wareing was appointed 11 months ago by Trinity Mirror and is understood to have been given the job of making the pro-Unionist title more like a “normal paper”.

The News Letter was sold along with Trinity’s other Irish titles to venture capital group 3i for £46.3m with former Mirror Group chief executive David Montgomery acting as an adviser.

It is Montgomery who is thought to have penned the controversial leader column published this week, which said the newspaper was “making a start to rebuild Protestant and Unionist pride and confidence”.
