The publishers of Legal Week are planning to shake up the legal sector with the launch of an international news magazine for lawyers.
Legal Week Global will be produced by Legal Week staff in London but will have a separate news agenda aimed specifically at business lawyers in the US, Europe, Australia, Hong Kong and Asia.
The A4-format magazine is modelled largely on Global Professional Media’s Legal Week and contains analysis, comment and specialist business law news. It will launch in March as a monthly, but the company hopes the magazine will become a weekly by the end of the year.
Mary Heaney, who quit as editor of The Lawyer (with publisher Mark Wyatt) to launch Legal Week, will oversee the launch as editor-in-chief. Heaney said the multinational nature of the legal business meant there were now many publishing opportunities.
"This is extremely important for us because we see ourselves as an international company and business law is completely global," she said. "There is a yawning gap in the market for this title and we have the perfect mix of skills and experience to fill it."
Wyatt said most B2B titles targeting lawyers overseas were "very poor" and he suggested the launch could lead to the setting up of exhibitions and conferences.
The editorial team on the launch includes Legal Week editor John Malpas, deputy editor Alex Noverese, features editor Derek Bedlow, international editor Richard Tromans and City editor Saira Zaki.
It will also rely on contributions from international correspondents.
Legal Week was named best business and professional magazine at last year’s PPA. Global Professional Media also publishes the monthly titles Legal Director and Legal IT. It is understood it will announces two more launches later this year.
