Veteran newspaper columnist Keith Waterhouse has finished writing a play about the dying days of Fleet Street.
In an interview with the Independent on Sunday, Waterhouse – who started on Hugh Cudlipp’s Daily Mirror in his twenties and turns 80 this week – says he hopes to see the play performed later this year, but he can’t find a director.
“There’s nowhere to go for gossip any more – you used to go to El Vino’s and come out with enough to write a book. Fleet Street was a very gregarious place,” Waterhouse recalls.
