Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Jonnie Marbles jailed over Murdoch foam pie attack

By Andrew Pugh

Jonathan May-Bowles, the protestor who threw a plate of shaving foam at News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch at a select committee hearing last month, has been jailed for six weeks.

May-Bowles, also known as Jonnie Marbles, pleaded guilty to assault and causing harassment, alarm or distress at a hearing last week and was sentenced this afternoon at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London.

The 26-year-old attacked Murdoch as he was giving evidence to the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee into allegations of phone-hacking at the News of the World on 19 July.

After pleading guilty to the offences last week, May-Bowles, who is a part-time stand-up comedian, said: ‘I would just like to say this has been the most humble day of my life”, mocking Murdoch’s opening statement to the committee.

He was also ordered to pay £250 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
