Jobs go as Brighton Argus shifts subbing to Southampton

By Oliver Luft

The Newsquest-owned Brighton Argus is understood to have cut seven jobs as part of the shift of its news subbing operation to offices in Southampton.

Press Gazette understands that just two subbing posts will remain at the Argus’s office in Brighton – those of chief sub editor and assistant chief sub editor.

Six subbing posts will go from Brighton with the post of Worthing district reporter also being cut.

Newsquest is understood to be creating three new subbing posts in Southampton and to have started a formal consultation with affected staff in Brighton on Friday.

Any Brighton-based staff who succeed in taking up the new jobs in Southampton would face a two-hour commute by car each way,

The Argus moved its printing operation to Southampton last year and had previously created a centralised subbing unit there serving its Hampshire newspapers.
