Job losses on the way as subbing and reporting roles merge at Local World daily

By Ellie Chambers

Editorial staff at a regional daily are facing redundancy as subbing and reporting roles merge.

Production and journalist jobs at the Grimsby Telegraph, owned by publisher Local World, will be combined to create 12 new content manager roles.

The restructure will result in the loss of two editorial jobs, thought to be the first editorial redundancies made by the publisher since it was formed in January from titles owned by Northcliffe Media and Iliffe News and Media.

Local World has not confirmed how many jobs will be lost, but redundancies are anticipated for  management, commercial and administrative staff.

Editor Michelle Lalor announced the move last week and it is understood that meetings with affected staff were held on Monday.

Local World issued a statement saying: “Grimsby and Scunthorpe Media Group continually reviews its operations in accordance with its current revenue streams.

“As a result, a strategic review has taken place over the last few weeks which may result in possible headcount reductions across all areas of the business, which includes editorial.

“It is vitally important in the current climate that we remain as structurally focused as possible in the ever changing multi-media environment at Local World.

“We have notified all employees who may be affected and consultations with those employees are underway.”
