ITV will tonight broadcast an update on how former ITN journalist Ed Mitchell is faring, a year after the national press reported on his descent into homelessness and alcoholism, sleeping rough on Hove seafront in East Sussex.

Mitchell entered rehab last year and declared himself bankrupt after amassing £250,000 in credit card debts.

In an interview at the weekend with his local paper, The Argus in Brighton, Mitchell said: “In a bizarre way I look at myself as a journalistic story, which is very odd.

“It’s shameful and pathetic. I’ve got an honours degree in psychology and for 30 years I was a financial journalist.

“How does a person get into that state? Well the answer is, actually, rather too easily.”

Ed Mitchell: What Happened Next will be broadcast on ITV1 at 8.30pm tonight. His autobiography, From Headlines To Hard Times, is published by John Blake, priced £16.99.
