Irishman wins the top picture editors' prize

For the first time in its 13-year history, the Picture Editors’

Awards top prize has gone to an Irish photographer.

The awards, which this year were hosted by former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, aim to recognise and reward the best of photographic journalism throughout the UK and Ireland. Kennedy praised photographers for having "much the same skill that the brilliant cartoonist can bring to political journalism".

Bryan O’Brien received the BG Group photographer of the year award for his work for the Irish Times. Scottish paper The Sunday Herald was awarded Getty Images newspaper of the year. The Sunday Times won magazine of the year.
