Irish ABCs: Big falls across NI and the Republic

By Oliver Luft

Most major Irish daily and Sunday newspapers failed to grow their circulations year on year during the first six months of 2010, according to figures released today.

Just 12 papers put on circulation, however heavy drops were most keenly felt in the Republic of Ireland as several titles suffered big year-on-year declines during the first half of the year, according to data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Thirteen paid-for titles in the Republic of Ireland suffered double-digit year-on-year circulation declines during the six-months to the end of June.

The Fingal Independent suffered the biggest fall as it dropped 19.6 per cent year-on-year to an average circulation of 3,839 for each issue over the period.

Similarly, the Munster Express dropped 18.60 per cent to an average circulation of 6,742, while the Leinster Leader dropped to an average circulation of 8,488 during the period – a fall of 17.4 per cent year-on-year.

Of the bigger tiles, the Sunday Tribune recorded one of the larger falls in circulation to 54,400 – a drop of 17.2 per cent year-on-year – while the Sunday Business Post had an average circulation of 49,637 for each issue it published in the period – a drop of 14.1 per cent year on year.

The Sunday Independent (series), had an average circulation of 265,455 in the period, a year-on-year drop of 2.5 per cent.

The Irish Times (series) averaged a daily circulation of 105,742 during the period –a drop of 7.6 per cent.

Only two paid-for papers in the Republic of Ireland put on circulation, the Donegal News which averaged a circulation of 3,987 – an increase of 2.9 per cent – and the Donegal News Group, which averaged a circulation of 15,467 for a 0.3 per cent increase.

In Northern Ireland several newspapers had year on year circulation gains.

The Sunday Journal recorded a circulation of 2,684 – a rise of 8.5 per cent – but the biggest rises were claimed by the five free Community Telegraph titles, which are mostly published for regions of Belfast.

The Belfast Telegraph fell one per cent year on year to 67,353, while The Irish News fell 2.7 per cent to 45,531.
