Independent journalists reject 2 per cent pay rise

By Dominic wireposts

Journalists at the Independent titles have rejected a 2 per cent pay rise effective from Jan 1, saying it was in effect a 1.2 per cent pay rise because it was due in April – the Guardian reports.

Union members are to ballot for strike action next month over the pay deal which they argue, allowing for inflation, is a pay cut. Last month Independent journalists complained about the extra strain being caused by the launch of new daily “i”.

While the loss-making Independent titles are offering journalists two per cent, profitable regional press publisher Newsquest is seeking to freeze its journalists pay – a move which has led to a wave of industrial action.
