2010 DATE NOW CONFIRMED
The British Press Awards have for more than 30 years celebrated the best of Fleet Street journalism.
They remain the most rigorously and openly judged journalism awards of any in the country. The judging process involves more than 80 of the UK's leading journalists - made up of a mixture of independent figures from across the industry and representatives of all the UK national titles.
Winning a British Press Award is seen as the crowning achievement of any journalist's career - and just being shortlisted is to be set among the elite of the profession.
The 2010 event is being held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Tuesday, 23 March 2010.
Entry opens 9 November 2009. To qualify, all entries must have been published between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2009.
Director of the Society of Editors Bob Satchwell is the independent chairman of the judges.

Submission Notes
Entries are to be submitted on CD (unless otherwise specified). The CD must hold a high resolution 300 dpi PDF, TIFF or JPEG of each entry, plus supporting statement.
Please fill out carefully and include an entry form along with EACH entry you submit. The entry form should be submitted as a hard copy.
Entires are split into four categories, premier awards, team awards, individual awards and visual awards.
PREMIER AWARDS
As with last year there will be three premier awards which carry no entry fee but are decided by the British Press Awards Academy of around 100 senior figures from UK journalism.
International Journalist of the Year
International journalist of the year recognises the courage of an overseas journalist who has battled against oppression and nominees are provided by the Foreign Press Association and the World Association of Newspapers.
Journalist of the Year
Journalist of the Year is nominated and judged by the British Press Awards Academy.
Newspaper of the Year
Editors are invited to provide a supporting statement (up to 500 words) to make their case for Newspaper of the Year. This should be emailed to apont@pressgazette.co.uk.

Website of the Year
This award recognises the national newspaper judged to be at the cutting edge of digital media.
It will need to have broken stories, be brilliantly designed and show evidence of using a plethora of new techniques to bring its journalism to life online.

Supplement of the year
Entries will be judges on outstanding design, content, use of photography and readability.

Scoop of the Year
The story, or series of stories on one subject, which everyone else wished they had broken. This can be a team or an individual.

Campaign of the Year
Judges will be looking for campaigns which made waves, struck a chord with readers and made a difference.

The Cudlipp Award
The award, sponsored by the British Journalism Review (BJR), commemorates the journalism of the great editor and editorial director Hugh Cudlipp and recognises excellence in popular journalism. It is open to all editors, writers or teams of journalists. This award is judged by a separate BJR panel of distinguished journalists.

VISUAL ENTRIES
For each entry in this section please supply:

Photographer of the Year
News and feature pictures are eligible here. Judges will be looking for versatility, technical skill and the ability to capture the news picture that matters. The mood of an interview subject or feature needs to come across strongly.
Sports Photographer of the Year
Entries can come from a single sport or from two or three different sports, and may be action shots or feature pictures. Judges will be looking for compelling images that get under the skin of a sport or a sports star, or reveal a unique moment of sporting drama.
Cartoonist of the Year
Pocket cartoons, strips, caricatures, political cartoons and illustrations are eligible in this category. Judges will be looking for the cartoons that best capture the events of 2008.
INDIVIDUAL CATEGORIES

Reporter of the Year
The category for the story breakers of the national press. The judges will be looking for exclusives, expertly researched and brilliantly told. Tenacity, investigative flair and an ability to handle difficult subjects carefully will all score highly. In the case of long-running investigations, you may send up to three items to count as one story entry.
Foreign Reporter of the Year
This category covers journalists, staff or freelance, who have been based in a foreign country from where they have filed revealing pieces of work which bring that country and its affairs to light for a UK audience.
Political Journalist of the Year
The winner will be someone who the politicians had to read, judges will want evidence of agenda-setting journalism from brilliantly connected writers with an exceptional knowledge of the political scene.
Business and Finance Journalist of the Year
For journalists working on City, business and personal finance desks. In what has been a vintage year for business journalism, entrants will be judged on their ability to break news, predict trends, analyse stories and explain issues to a general audience.
Interviewer of the Year
An imaginative choice of interviewees will be taken into account, as will an ability to extract new revelations from frequently interviewed subjects. Judges will also be looking for a writer with a distinctive style in a crowded field. Interviews from specialist areas such as business and sport are eligible.
Feature Writer of the Year
Quality of writing is paramount in this category. Judges will be looking for journalists who demonstrate a compelling style in news reportage, colour writing, analysis, and backgrounders. One-to-one interviewers should not be entered in this category.
Columnist of the Year
Entrants to this category should have a regular bylined column. The winner will be someone with a unique style and the ability to stir up debate and may annoy every bit as much as delight.
Showbiz Reporter of the Year
In this highly competitive field, emphasis will be on scoops that led the pack and cut through the PR fluff with revealing stories which get to the heart of the subject. Open to news reporters and columnists.
Exclusive stories will score highly, but judges will also look for lively writing, dedication and the ability to get behind the scenes with the stars of stage, screen, TV and the music industry.
Digital Journalist of the Year
For any journalist whose work appears online and which plays to the strengths of that medium by making use of features such as blogging techniques, data, interactivity and multimedia content.

Sports Journalist of the Year
This category is open to news writers, match reporters, feature writers and columnists in the world of sport. Entries may be from a variety of sports or from one specialist area. Judges will be looking for brilliant writing and agenda-setting reporting that gave readers the best insight into sporting events during 2008.
Specialist Journalist of the Year
For journalists with specialisms not covered by any other category, such as science, motoring, defence or the environment. The judges look for journalists who led their field in 2008 – breaking news, analysing trend and bringing their subject to a wider audience.
Young Journalist of the Year
Open to all journalists aged 26 or under on 31 December 2008 who have not previously been shortlisted for this award. Entries may include work from any journalistic discipline. Judges will be looking for the individual who has made the most impact in 2008. The winner of this award will also be presented with a travel bursary of £5,000 donated by the late Dame Ruth King in memory of her husband, Cecil Harmsworth King.
Critic of the Year
For reviews and criticism in any area of journalism – including theatre, dance, music, art, books, television and radio, food etc. Writing that enlightens, compels and entertains the general reading audience will score highly.
