Guardian columnist and former managing director of Carlton Productions Steve Hewlett has been appointed nonexecutive chairman of Guardian Media Group's Manchester television station, Channel M.
The announcement of Hewlett's appointment follows an expansion of the channel's services within the Greater Manchester region, with an increase in staff from 34 to 104.
Hewlett said in a statement: "Over the past few years, I have watched the station's development with interest and feel that it is set to become a major force in regional broadcasting over the years."
It is hoped that Hewlett's addition will boost the journalistic calibre of the channel, which launched in 2000.
