It was a case of “I’m a Surrey Herald & News Reporter… Get Me Out Of Here!” as two of the paper’s journalists launched their own bush tucker challenge on the unsuspecting public in Staines High Street.
Before they unleashed the creepy crawlies, reporters Tom Shaw and Patsy Duffy thought they would try them themselves in a mock-up of the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! hit television show.
“Our colleagues pulled all sorts of faces when we tried the meal worms and grubs, but they didn’t taste too bad,” said Duffy. “They were a bit like the seaweed you would find at a Chinese restaurant.”
But Shaw thought the worms had a vile aftertaste.
The public reaction was a lot braver than that of the newsroom. “We couldn’t believe it when a young girl chomped her way through a scorpion lollipop, then asked if she could try the worms,” said Duffy.
