Hasan: with Five since launch
Roohi Hasan, news editor of Five News, has been voted the media professional of the year in the Asian Women of Achievement Awards.
She was singled out as a respected and popular journalist whose hard work, talent and dedication played a key role in the success of Five News.
The entries were judged by Press Association editor Jonathan Grun and Daily Telegraph deputy editor Sarah Sands.
Grun said: “Roohi is a great role model and a great journalist who has made a success of a demanding career in television and won the admiration, respect and affection of her colleagues.” One of the original line-up of staff when Five launched in 1997, Roohi started as newsdesk assistant and was quickly promoted through the ranks to her present post.
The judges said that she combined a thorough knowledge of international and domestic news with an understanding of all the technical and journalistic aspects of television work.
Shortlisted for the media award were: Anjana Ahuja, Times feature writer; Farah Nayeri, senior European economic news writer at Bloomberg TV; Nasanine Moshiri, senior broadcast journalist with BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat programme; and Geeta Gupta and Jas Shetra, who together launched the Mega Mela, a three-day live event to showcase Asian talent.
Last year’s winner was Zubeida Malik, a reporter on Radio 4’s Today programme.
