Guerin murder conviction upheld

By Press Gazette

A Dublin court has upheld the conviction of the only member of the John Gilligan drugs gang found guilty of the murder of Sunday Independent journalist,Veronica Guerin, shot dead in June I996.

The Court of Criminal Appeal dismissed the appeal by 41-year-old Brian Meehan who had been found guilty by the non-jury Special Criminal Court in July 1999 and sentenced to life imprisonment with concurrent sentences for drugs and firearms offences.

Following a 31-day trial the court found that Meehan was the driver of the motor-cycle from which a gunman fired the six shots which killed Veronica Guerin as she was stopped in her car at traffic-lights.
