Girl With a One Track Mind smarts over ‘hooker’ headline

By Dominic Ponsford

“Girl with a One Track Mind” blogger and author Zoe Margolis has said she is taking legal action against the Independent on Sunday after she was referred to as a “hooker” in a headline.

Margolis wrote an article for the Independent on Sunday on 7 March in which she described being outed by the Sunday Times as the author of her anonymous sex blog in 2006.

She wrote: “Journalists harassed my parents, turned up at my film-set workplace, dug around at my old university – and offered money to chance acquaintances to dish the dirt. I still haven’t figured out how they obtained my ex-directory phone number, which they bombarded with calls.”

Her spokesman told Press Gazette that the piece was originally headlined: ‘I was a hooker who became an agony aunt”, but that the word hooker was changed to “good-time girl” in a later edition.

She said in a statement: “I’m absolutely distraught by this damage to my reputation both professionally and personally. Unfortunately this situation just shows how much work still needs to be done to challenge the sexism of the media in their conflation of female sexual desire with the sex industry.”

Press Gazette understands Margolis is “proceeding with legal action” and has spoken to lawyers.

Her latest book, Girl with a One Track Mind: Exposed, was published in paperback on 5 March.
