We revealed last month that Gannett is introducing week-long unpaid breaks for management at its UK division, Newsquest.
Editor and Publisher talks to some of the editors who’ve already taken their “furlough” week in the US.
Gannett has issued strict orders: no email and no work-related activities during the period. “If they work during that week, we are required to pay them,” the publisher said.
One editor tells E&P: “We have to be completely unplugged. I will cut wood and dig in the dirt.”
Another adds: “Some people have disconnected their e-mail feed to their blackberries. They are just making sure we are not in violation of labour laws.”
