Family of sick girl thanks Whitchurch Herald

By Press Gazette

A family invited Whitchurch Herald staff to a party to thank the paper for its successful campaign on behalf of a handicapped teenager.

The parents of Rebecca Humphreys organised the party to celebrate their daughter’s 16th birthday – and the paper’s role in helping win a planning battle.

The family had sought planning consent for a purpose-built family home in Ash, North Shropshire, for Rebecca, who suffers from a rare disease which leaves her unable to walk or talk. Planners rejected the scheme claiming it was against Green Belt rules but the Herald launched a campaign urging that the family be treated as a special case.

The campaign finally overcame the objections. The family’s invitation to the Herald said: “Our new home has exceeded our expectations in every way and has provided the perfect safe environment for Rebecca to look forward to her adult years. We would like the opportunity to thank the Herald again and to show everyone what a difference our new home has made to Rebecca’s life.”
