It did not take long for kidnapped freelance reporter James Brandon to become a staffer. On page four of Saturday’s Daily Telegraph, there was a background piece describing how Brandon was one of a band of young journalists who had gone out to Iraq and how he had freelanced for the Sunday Telegraph, The Independent, The Scotsman and the Christian Science Monitor. But by the leader page he had become “Our brave man in Iraq.” Brandon was described as “the kidnapped Telegraph reporter.” Such is the fate of a freelance, once everyone wants your story.
