Michael Ellison has been appointed news editor of The Independent in a reshuffle of the paper’s senior editorial staff.
He has been travelling and working as a freelance for the past year but prior to that worked on The Guardian where he held various posts including night editor, home news editor and New York correspondent.
Ellison is replacing Adam Leigh, who is now executive editor, features, taking charge of the Review section.
Leigh joined The Independent in 1995 from the Birmingham Post where he was news editor. He has also worked as news editor of The Independent on Sunday and deputy foreign editor of The Independent.
He replaces Laurence Earle, who takes the job of editor of the Saturday magazine from Victoria Summerley, who is to be in charge of the seven-day travel desk and the weekly property and personal finance supplements.
Leigh said of his new role: “I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity to develop the Review, and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented team.”
