The Courier Series asked other Johnston Press editors whether other police services supplied pictures of convicted criminals to local newspapers. These are some of its findings:
DERBYSHIRE POLICE
No problems experienced with the supply of photos of convicted people.
ESSEX POLICE
Editors state that Essex has always been helpful in supplying pictures for big cases. For example, the Debra Carne murder case. A girl was murdered then her body set on fire.
Police supplied pictures of defendants.
HAMPSHIRE POLICE
Hampshire Police provides pictures of convicted felons if their sentence is two years and above. This has been the policy for five years.
HUMBERSIDE POLICE
Humberside Police supply pictures of anyone sentenced to four years or more in prison.
Pictures of people sentenced to shorter terms are only supplied if the service determines a public interest exists.
LANCASHIRE POLICE
This force regularly supplies photos of convicted criminals on a range of charges from GBH to internet porn.
LINCOLNSHIRE POLICE
So far no problems have been encountered by newspapers when requesting photographs of convicted people.
NORFOLK POLICE
Norfolk Police regularly provide pictures taken of people who have been convicted. This has increased in the past year.
NORTHUMBRIA POLICE
No experience of the service refusing to provide pictures. In the past it has volunteered pictures through its press office.
NORTH YORKSHIRE
North Yorkshire Police supplies pics of people sentenced for more than five years.
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE POLICE
There is an agreed tariff which states that on being found guilty, the photograph of any criminal who receives a life sentence may be released to the press.
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE
No problems experienced with the supply of photos of convicted people.
SUFFOLK POLICE
Newspapers have to outline what the benefit to the public would be if the police were to release a picture of a defendant. Requests are in writing to the chief constable who makes the decision.
SUSSEX POLICE
The policy varies from case to case. They have supplied pictures of convicted adults as well as those of juveniles who are subject to ASBO orders.
THAMES VALLEY POLICE
Thames Valley always supplies pictures of convicted criminals.
WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE
Pictures are supplied, on request by newspapers, of convicted criminals, without any problem.
