Editor of The People steps down

The editor of The People, Mark Thomas, has stepped down to ‘pursue other career opportunities”.

Mirror assistant editor Lloyd Embley has been moved over to The People as acting editor.

Daily Mirror head of news Gary Jones will assist deputy editor Ben Proctor until a new editor is appointed.

Thomas began his newspaper career on The People before joining the News of the World, were he was promoted to chief reporter after two years.

He went to the Daily Mirror as investigations editor, then assistant editor (features).

He then joined the Sunday Mirror, where he was deputy editor, reporting to Tina Weaver.

Thomas was made editor of The People in March 2003.

The title’s most recent ABC figure was 696,091 – the first time it had fallen below 700,000 in its history.

Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey said: ‘We thank Mark for his hard work and dedication. We wish him well for the future.”
