The bookies believe Ed Carr is now a dead cert to replace Bill Emmott as editor of The Economist.
Paddy Power has closed its book on the race for the editorship of the million-selling weekly current affairs magazine. It has had several requests for bets of up to £500 on Carr, the magazine’s current business and financial editor, who had odds of 6/1 to take the job.
A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “After several requests for bets of up to £500 and requests to open new betting accounts specifically to bet on this market, the evidence suggested a decision had been made. Particularly as this all came in the space of a few hours.
“Of course, we’re not in the position to say a decision has definitely been made but when we see betting peak in this way our experience usually suggests it means something.”
