A directory of exiled foreign journalists now living in the UK has been compiled to encourage editors in the print and broadcast media to employ them and use their work.
The directory contains the educational and employment details of 43 journalists from 24 countries, along with the story of why they fled their homes. It was compiled by the PressWise Refugees, Asylum-seekers and the Media Project.
One journalist featured is Dr Nazand Begikhani from Iraqi Kurdistan.
Fluent in five languages , she fled to Britain after the death of her father and two of her brothers at the hands of Saddam’s Ba’ath party regime.
PressWise director Mike Jempson said: “Our primary aim is to get them back into work. But we also hope that by getting the real experts on what it is like to be a refugee into UK newsrooms, they can help to counter some of the misinformation that appears in the press.”
To order a copy of the directory call 0117 941 5889. An online version of the directory can be accessed at www.ramproject.org.uk.
