December ABCs: Star only Sunday title up year-on-year

The Daily Star Sunday was only the national Sunday Newspaper to increase its sales year-on-year in December with Sunday newspaper sales as a whole down 4.4 per cent.

According to ABC circulation figures released today, The Northern and Shell-owned red-top increased its average sale to 360,416 in December, a rise of 1.58 per cent year-on-year – though it was down 14.5 per cent on November’s ABC figure of over 420,000.

The Sunday Sport saw the biggest drop with a figure of 87,069, a year-on-year decrease of 15.3 per cent and The People’s loss was for a second month in double figures, down 12-per-cent year-on-year to 674,78.

The Sunday Express and the Sunday Herald both posted losses of more than 10 per cent with circulationsrespectively of 677,480 (down from 759,495) and 47,442 (down from 52,884).

In the Sunday tabloid market, collectively down 5.2 per cent, the Sunday Mirror continued to do relatively well after its 1.8 rise in November with a year-on-year loss of -0.57 and circulation of 1,315,188. The News of the World was down 6.31 per cent to 3,167,435, from 3,380,746 last December.

In the qualities the Independent on Sunday – whose editor Tristan Davies resigned this week – remained stable with a slight loss of 0.33 per cent, or just over 600 sales, and sold an average of 198,222 in December.
