Mowlam: to give sex tips to Zoo readers
Men’s weekly magazine Zoo has hired former Labour MP Mo Mowlam to write an agony column and give its readers advice on sex.
The former Northern Ireland Secretary contacted the Emap magazine in March with the idea of becoming an agony aunt.
Editor Paul Merrill admitted he was surprised by the approach at first but claimed Mowlam had a “real insight” into sex that could appeal to readers.
“Mo wrote to us saying she was a big fan of Zoo,” he told Press Gazette. “She made the point that when she had her brain tumour and put on lots of weight and Lynda Lee-Potter from the Daily Mail compared her to a Geordie trucker, she got lots of letters from Geordie truckers saying they thought she was fantastic. They put pictures of her on their dashboards and stuff.
Since then she has been a real hit with young people. Blokes fancy older women and Mo’s no exception.”
The move will provide fresh competition for Tory MP Ann Widdecombe, who writes a weekly agony column in The Guardian.
Zoo sent Mowlam a list of questions, ranging from “should I have a threesome?” to “my girlfriend’s crap at sex; should I dump her?” – which Merrill said she handled “brilliantly”.
In response to the threesome query, Mowlam advised: “Sex is not just a physical act, it affects you emotionally. What if you prefer the other girl? What if the two girls gang up on you? Can you physically satisfy two women?”.
Merrill said: “The standard of answers she has sent back shows that she was clearly wasted as a politician and probably better suited to solving people’s personal problems. Maybe she could have done it with Gerry Adams and Bill Clinton.
I am sure if Bill had consulted Mo before leaping into bed with Monica, then the whole set-up of Western politics could have been very different.”
Mowlam’s first column will appear in next week’s issue of Zoo, out on 13 July.
