Cup first for Boro

By Press Gazette

The Scarborough Evening News hit the streets with a 24-page Saturday special on the FA Cup clash with Chelsea.

The Evening News was first with the match report and pictures, coming off the press at 4.30pm with 10,000 copies to catch afternoon shoppers and fans in town after the game.

Conference side Scarborough, fielding a team that cost £2,000, had beaten three Nationwide League teams before coming up against Chelsea’s £200m superstars.

The newspaper, a Johnston Press title, published about 80 news and sport pages in the build-up to the match and carried a covermounted flag. On Monday, there were another 12 pages of pictures of the game – which Chelsea won 1-0 – and reaction.

Editor Ed Asquith said: “Staff were in throughout the weekend. The fixture gripped the imagination of the town – and the media at large. It was great fun for us and our readers and we’re pleased our coverage hit the bullseye.”
