The Isle of Wight County Press has celebrated record sales of 40,553 with its biggest issue.
Editor Brian Dennis’s broadsheet went up to 84 pages, including a 24-page property supplement, after the ABC regional newspaper figures for July to December last year were published.
Dennis, who has been editing the newspaper for five years, has seen regular sales increases and refuted the suggestion that operating on an island gave him a captive audience.
“Unless you produce what people want to read, no matter how captive they are, they won’t read it if they don’t like it.” He has 30 journalists and photographers plus stringers to cover “a good news area with lots of cracking stories”, and says the paper is doing well because it is sticking to what it is good at – “covering the big and little issues well, a high story count, being accurate and entertaining.”
