Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

ITN’s Tom Bradby makes front pages on his hols after bid to save drowning man

By Conori Bell-Bhuiyan

ITV News political editor Tom Bradby made the front pages of the Metro and Daily Mail after what the latter called "harrowing" tweets describing his attempts to rescue a man from drowning in a Greek harbour.

The News at Ten presenter was holidaying in the Greek port of Rafina when he tweeted that he was “shaking with shock and anger” after watching an elderly man commit suicide while "9 out of 10" police and officials stood by and watched.

“Dived in, tried to help, couldn’t get him out, completely shocking”, the 48-year-old presenter reported to his 47,000 Twitter followers.

Today’s Metro reported Bradby’s story with the front page headline “ITV news host dives in to aid drowning man”, saying the TV host had “swapped interviewing for action”.

The Daily Mail also featured Bradby’s picture on the front page, alongside the headline “TV newsman Bradby in desperate bid to save suicide plunge diver”.

The story was widely reported across other papers, with the Daily Mirror describing the presenter as "heroic" while others reported similar praise from his Twitter followers.

The Telegraph and Mail also noted the "skyrocketing" suicide rate in Greece, which has reportedly tripled since 2011.
