Cheryl Cole’s brother sues Daily Star for libel

By Sarah Limbrick

The brother of X-Factor star Cheryl Cole is suing the Daily Star after it claimed he was a convicted criminal.

Garry Tweedy is demanding damages of £100,000 over the story. Tweedy, who works as his sister’s personal assistant, claimed the paper published allegations that he is a convicted criminal who has been in prison several times.

The allegations also appeared on the paper’s website but were taken down on 13 April after his solicitors complained to the Daily Stars’ publishers Express Newspapers.

Tweedy claimed the story has seriously injured his personal and professional reputation and caused him significant distress and embarrassment.

He is now seeking damages for libel as well as an injunction banning repetition of the claims at the heart of his lawsuit.
