Car magazine to relaunch in face of tough competition

By Press Gazette

Car magazine is relaunching as an upmarket, feature-driven publication in the face of tough competition and declining ABC figures.

The relaunch will see the magazine adopt a new square format and focus more on highquality journalism and photography, while its website, www.carmagazine.co.uk, will take on a more central role, breaking news and information.

Editor Jason Barlow said: "We have stripped the magazine of all the elements which a website can handle better. The focus of this reinvention is for the magazine to play to its strengths by delivering incisive magazine craft, fearless journalism, acerbic opinion and stunning photography."

In the most recent ABC figures, Car fell to 94,033, down 8.9 per cent. But while confirming that the upcoming ABC figures are likely to show a continuation of this decline, the magazine's associate editor Greg Fountain denied the relaunch was in direct response to this. He said: "It is quite specifically not a knee-jerk reaction."
