Broadcasters prepare for first live debate with European Commission hopefuls

By Paul McNally

An alliance of public service broadcasters from all over Europe is preparing to air the first-ever live televised debate between would-be presidents of the European Commission.

The European Broadcasting Union, based in Geneva, is producing the debate on 15 May for distribution on members' TV networks and online.

The programme will take place inside the European parliament in Brussels, filmed before a live audience and presented in English by veteran Italian journalist and TV presenter Monica Maggioni.

Producers will use social media to collect comments and questions from viewers using the hashtag #TellEurope.

Editorial decisions are being taken by a board of experienced news journalists from the EBU's member organisations, which are dotted around 56 countries in Europe and beyond.

It is expected that between five and seven candidates will take part. More details can be found here.
