Staff past and present at Rex Features joined Frank Selby, who, with his wife Elizabeth, founded the London photo agency in 1954, to celebrate his 90th birthday last week
Joining the 80 Rex staff were photographers who were with Rex when it was still just Frank and Elizabeth and a handful of staffers. Some began their highly successful careers with Rex, and some continued to be represented by Rex for more than 40 years.
Rex’s first full-time employee, Dennis Cooper, joined the celebrations. Cooper joined Rex when the firm operated out of the front room of the Selby family home in Willesden, and later went on to found Scope Features. Also in attendance was Rex’s former sales director Allan Day.
Bill Zygmant, a photographer for Rex in the Seventies, spoke on behalf of the assembled snappers and for those who were unable to attend, describing Frank and Elizabeth as the most honest people in Fleet Street, and thanking them for nurturing so many careers in editorial photography over the years.
