The Big Issue Scotland has criticised Glasgow City Council for demanding greater powers to deal with street sellers.
The response follows a call by the city council to the Scottish
Executive to change the law so that Big Issue sellers, market
researchers, beggars and buskers, who escape the requirements for a
street trader’s licence, would need to be regulated.
Big Issue sellers are currently exempt as they are designated as newspaper vendors.
Cheril
von Barsewisch, chief executive of Big Issue Scotland, said: “We
already have a badging system and a code of conduct for vendors. I do
not see the need for more bureaucracy.”
