Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Belfast Telegraph named NI’s newspaper of the year

By Jun Merrett

The Belfast Telegraph and the Irish News were the big winners at Northern Ireland’s Press and Broadcast Awards as each newspaper collected three prizes.

The Telegraph collected the coveted title of newspaper of the year while its reporter Claire McNeilly was named both newcomer and specialist journalist of the year.

Deric Henderson, Irish editor of the Press Association, was also a double winner as he collected the journalist of the year and print news journalist prizes.

The Irish News picked up its prizes as Brendan Crossan was named sports journalist of the year. Colleague Gary McDonald picked up the business journalist prize and Jeremy Kirker collected the newspaper production journalist award.

Other winners include UTV News which was named news programme of the year for its Live Tonight Special on the Ryan Report, which looked into allegations of child abuse in Ireland.

Scoop of the Year went to BBC Northern Ireland for its investigation into the business affairs of Iris Robinson, the wife of former first minister Peter Robinson.
