BBC goes Orange

BBC World Service has teamed up with mobile phone operator Orange to provide news direct to users’ handsets via SMS.

The ‘BBC News on SMS’ service was launched in Mumbai, India, on 17 January, and will offer breaking news, business and sports news from around the world, around the clock.

The service follows similar BBC international news text offerings in Zimbabwe and parts of South America, according to a World Service spokeswoman. It also ties in with the Service’s 70th anniversary this year.
