The Argus in Brighton has added the prize for Newsquest daily newspaper of the year to its trophy cabinet.
The Press Gazette Regional Press Awards newspaper of the year was praised by a panel of independent judges for the “all-round variety of its editorial package, from punchy news pages, through engaging features and an excellent what’s on service to a well-rounded sports section.”
Newsquest is the UK’s second biggest regional newspaper publisher, with 212 titles.
The other prize winners were: Trainee reporter of the year – Danny Brierley, Lancashire Evening Telegraph; Feature writer of the year – Angela Wintle, The Argus, Brighton; Sports reporter of the year – Andy Neild, Lancashire Evening Telegraph; Daily photographer of the year – Clive Lawrence, Lancashire Evening Telegraph; Weekly photographer of the year – Phil Loach, Stourbridge News; Daily newspaper designer of the year – Angela Harffey, The Argus, Brighton; Weekly newspaper designer of the year – Hywel Jones, Watford Observer; Daily newspaper reporter of the year – Liz Lamb, Northern Echo, Middlesbrough; Weekly newspaper reporter of the year – Charis Mastris, Basingstoke Gazette; Free newspaper of the year, under 64 pages – Runcorn World; Free newspaper of the year, over 64 pages – News Shopper; Paid-for weekly newspaper of the year, under 64 pages – Pontypool Free Press; Paid-for weekly newspaper of the year, over 64 pages – Wiltshire Times.
