Alan Skehan Award

Agency Sportsbeat has made the first award of a journalism prize to commemorate former Press Gazette sub-editor Alan Skehan.

The
award follows the launch of a two-month training course run by
Sportsbeat and St Mary’s College, Twickenham. Students learn about
match reporting, diary writing, post-match interviewing, feature
writing and sub-editing and are awarded credits towards their media
studies degrees.

The first winner of the prize, given to the most
promising student, is Luke Hamer, who plans to embark on a career in
journalism by starting an NCTJ pre-entry course at Leamington next year.

Skehan,
a former student at St Mary’s, was married there just eight months
before his sudden death from natural causes at the age of 27 in April
2004.

Pictured, from left, are: Daragh Minogue, head of media
arts at St Mary’s College; Luke Hamer; Anne Skehan (Alan’s mother); and
Richard Parsons (Alan’s father-in-law and partner in Sportsbeat).
