Richard Addis is returning to the UK to join the Financial Times as design editor and an assistant editor.
The former editor-in-chief of the Daily and Sunday Express is quitting his current job as editor of the Globe and Mail, Toronto.
Addis has been engaged in a successful battle in the past few years with the rival National Post, while it was owned by Lord Black, and FT editor Andrew Gowers says his use of "presentation as a weapon" caught his eye.
At the FT, Addis will assume responsibility for all aspects of visual presentation from design and layout to graphics and pictures, in the newspaper and on FT.com.
Gowers said of the appointment: "He is an outstanding newspaper professional with very broad and successful industry experience and a keen awareness of the importance of presentation as a competitive weapon in newspapers and the online world."
