Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

ABCe: Guardian.co.uk stays top with 31.7m users

By Dominic Ponsford

The Guardian retained top spot as the most popular UK national newspaper website in October with 31.7m unique users, up 24 per cent year on year.

Mail Online was in second place, according to ABCe, with 30.4m unique users – up 50.5 per cent year on year.

Telegraph Media Group was the third national newspaper above 30m unique users in October with 30m uniques, a year-on-year rise of 29.3 per cent.

News International‘s national titles were a long way behind the leaders. But as they gear up to move some of their content behind paywalls, they are probably now less concerned about the race to attract mass numbers of unique users.

Times Online was in fourth position in October with 20.87m unique users, up just 1.9 per cent year on year, and The Sun was in fifth position with 20.83m uniques, up 21.7 per cent.

Mirror Group was the biggest year-on-year riser with 10.1m unique users, up 74 per cent. And the Independent attracted 9.7m uniques in October, up 15.4 per cent.

Director of digital content at Guardian News and Media Emily Bell said: “Breaking the 30 million barrier for the second consecutive month is a great achievement.

“At the same time we can celebrate another milestone, with a record breaking 13,290,715 UK users, the biggest UK audience in the online newspaper market.

“Our Trafigura story and Charlie Brooker’s column on Jan Moir a few days later highlighted the way stories can grow and propagate through Twitter and Facebook, with steady streams of traffic being driven by these social media channels. Guardian.co.uk then provided the perfect space for readers to add their comments and opinions.”
