Incisive Media has announced its decision to close monthly business to consumer magazine Personal Computer World with effect from the August issue which is on sale next week.
Around a dozen staff will be affected by the move including nine involved in editorial and production roles. Incisive said today that there will inevitably be some “role redundancies” but that “every effort will be made to find alternative jobs for all those affected”.
Incisive has blamed the closure on the “unprecedented adverse economic climate”.
The company said in a statement: “Advertisement and copy sale revenues have declined in parallel with the contraction of the monthly personal computer magazine market, to the point that the title is no longer economically viable.”
Personal Computer World had an average audited circulation of 54,009 a month last year.
Managing director of Incisive’s professional services division Graham Harman said: “We have an extremely dedicated and talented team on PCW, and I want to thank them all for their outstanding effort and commitment under pressure.
“Sadly, no amount of hard work or innovation was going to turn around the structural decline in advertising and newsstand sales. The depth of this recession and the ease of access to information online has only served to accelerate the long term downward trend within this particular sector.
“Like the broader consumer magazine market, of which we’re proud to be a part, we have to ensure our efforts are focused on providing information in the way that consumers require it.”
Other magazines published by Incisive include Computing, Computeractive and Accountancy Age.
In March this year, Incisive Media informed its 2,000 staff that they would have to take a week’s unpaid holiday as a cost-saving measure.
